Seiko Buyer’s Guide: Current Model Lines Explained

SKX007 vs SRPD

Seiko has a massive catalog, covering many kinds of watches sold at many stores. This is why we understand if you may find it difficult to keep track of all of these watches. To help you out, we thought it would be useful to put together a short guide on the current model lines. If this is something that you want to learn more about, read on for a brief buyer’s guide on Seiko’s current model lines.

Credor

Credor is a sub-brand of Seiko that produces high-end wristwatches. Although Credor and Grand Seiko watches are built on the same base, the aesthetics are distinctly different. In modern models, Credor features dials made from enamel, decorated movements on par with what the highest houses in watchmaking produce, and a case shape that varies from even their own Credor line.

Grand Seiko

Nominally splintering off from Seiko in 2016, Grand Seiko still shares many skills with the larger brand, so much so that some Grand Seiko watches have featured techniques from the largest Seiko watchmaking facilities in Japan. These techniques include the sword-sharp hands and markers made with the Zaratsu steel finishing method, multiple dial finishing processes, and impeccable in-house movement building. Grand Seiko’s quartz calibers range from the sophisticated 9F family of models to robust automatic mechanical movements. Grand Seiko’s Spring Drive technology uses quartz precision to regulate a fully mechanical drive train.

Seiko 5 Sports Line

The Seiko 5 line was introduced in the 1960s. These watches featured automatic movement, a day and date window, water resistance, a recessed crown at the 4 o’clock position, and a durable steel case. These same features were later available in a higher-end line of watches. Today, Seiko has marketed their entry-level line as part of their sports collection, under the title Seiko 5 Sports. These watches retain the same features as their predecessors and promise durability and reliability.

Seiko Core Range

This is Seiko’s widest net; they cast it across the entire global consumer base. These are the watches you’ll find on the rotating displays at Target and millions of wrists around the world. With models ranging from huge solar chronographs to retro-styled men’s dress watches, to little sparkly pink watches, these Seiko Essentials models are worth sifting through to find gems.

Seiko Prospex Line

While the Prospex collection is mostly known for its dive watches, they have more to offer for Seiko enthusiasts.  This collection of watches by Seiko offers dive, field and pilot-style watches at an affordable price. They have a number of limited editions on occasion, and sometimes re-issue a vintage model.
