Seiko SKX vs. Seiko 5 Sports Divers. What’s the Difference? – Part 2

SKX vs SRPD

We talked about the biggest similarities and differences between the iconic Seiko SKX series and the newest timepiece on the block: the Seiko 5 Sports Diver. This watch was affectionately nicknamed 5KX, thanks to its inspiration — its well-loved predecessor.

Both have their own different charm — the SKX with its ISO certification perfect for professional dive watches and the 5KX with its fun, flexible variations. But now, perhaps the biggest question about the new Seiko 5 Sports Diver is whether or not it can match the unprecedented “moddability” of the SKX.

Modification Parts: Differences Between the SKX and 5KX

  1. Crystal Gaskets

The most notable difference modders need to remember is that the SKX series comes with a 0.4 mm crystal gasket, while the 5KX is thicker at 0.5 mm. This means that swapping the crystal gasket will be virtually impossible, and forcing the thinner version from the SKX line will only put unnecessary strain on the newer crystal.

  1. Spring Bar and Spring Bar Holes

Another difference that may complicate your modding involves the spring bars and spring bar holes, wherein the 5KX has drilled lugs while the older SKX series has none. The spring bar is also thicker in the SKX, so putting on a new strap for the 5KX will require thinner ones.

Modification Parts: Compatibility Between the SKX and 5KX

  1. Bezel

The bezel for the SKX and 5KX series are virtually the same, so you can feel confident that every piece will fit each other like a glove.

  1. Bezel Inserts

It’s only logical that the bezel inserts from the Seiko SKX models are compatible with the Seiko 5 Sports Diver since both already have similar bezels. This gives you plenty of options to experiment with modded bezel inserts.

  1. Crystal

Whether you have a flat or double dome crystal, both the SKX and 5KX have the same Hardlex material, which means you can easily upgrade them to sapphire crystal.

  1. Dials, Hands, and Chapter Ring

The SKX and 5KX practically mirror each other in terms of their dials, hands, and chapter rings, so you can customize both versions to your liking or even interchange the parts for the best of both worlds.

Continuing the Legacy of SKX: Modding the New Seiko 5 Sports Diver

Considering the throng of similarities between the two divers, as shown above, we can say that most SKX mod parts can mostly fit the 5KX. Watch modders have plenty to change and play around with, making the 5KX an exciting addition that can be just as fun to upgrade as the SKX series.
